Some 4th of July fun things to ask your guests at your BBQ

Why do we celebrate the 4th of July?  America celebrates July 4 as Independence Day because it was on July 4, 1776, that members of the Second Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence.
Who was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence?  If you guessed George Washington you would be wrong. It was John Hancock. As the president of the Second Continental Congress, John Hancock was the first to sign using an ornate and sprawling stroke, his signature stands out on the document. Now you know why that even today, people are asked for their “John Hancock” when asked to sign their names to a document.

Did you know that over 66 million people fire up the barbeque and grill up hamburgers and hot dogs on the Fourth. They spend over $135.6 million on fireworks and show their patriotism with the waving of the American flag.  And as another little factoid, those flags are primarily imported from China, who woulda thunk that?

There are 30 places in the nation with “liberty” in their name, two of them are Liberty, Missouri, and New Liberty, Iowa. Any guesses on the others?

Which city in Georgia has the largest 4th of July parade?  Well, it used to be Atlanta, but now it’s the city of Dunwoody  that is home to the largest 4th of July parade in GA? The theme this year is “Celebrating our Freedoms” and is  expected to draw a crowd of over 30,000 spectators to line the path of the parade that this year is said to have 2500 participants. It’s an event you just don’t want to miss so get there early to reserve your spot.

Father’s Day

June is when we celebrate Fathers Day…But did you know that Fathers day began over 100 years ago in what was, at that time, the  small town of Spokane Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd to honor her father after listening to a sermon about Mothers day. While she proposed celebrating it on June 5th, which was her fathers birthday, the town wanted more time to prepare for the event and set the celebration for the 3rd Sunday in June. Father’s day was officially proclaimed to be the third Sunday of June by President Johnson in 1966 and signed into law by President Nixon in 1972. It is celebrated around the world by many countries throughout the year, but over 50 countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June as well.

Many say however, that it really began in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908 and was organized by Grace Clayton to celebrate the lives of 210 fathers who were killed in the Monogah mining disaster several months earlier on Dec 6, 1907. However, it wasn’t celebrated in West Virginia again and so all the credit for the start of Father’s Day went to Dodd. **

So what does this have to do with printing? Well, no matter how you honor your dad during June we have many ways to show him how much you care about him. Memory books (a lifetime of photos), mugs and/or t-shirts customized with a favorite photo, wall art, life-sized cut out, and the list is as endless as your imagination. It’s Father’s Day, you imagine it, we make it happen.
